For A Gospel Purpose Marriage (Our 2-year Anniversary!!)
Two year's ago today, after 6 1/2 years of dating, we got marriedddd (!!!)
Christian grabbed us both Starbucks this morning, and even though he's on a break from school he woke up and drove me into the office because #compromise you know? On the way in, we talked about the unimportant details of our wedding day morning. The ones we wouldn't normally stop to remember... what time we woke up, what we did first, who was with us, did we have breakfast?! Something about that makes you feel less far away from it.
A few months before the wedding, it was the season of giddy butterflies and heart-eyes and registry fun, the brand new sparkle on my left hand still distracting me. We were working on our wedding website one day, as engaged millennials do, and we had to fill in the "Our Story," section. "We could talk about how we met! And we'll each share our side of the story, and add pictures, and maybe some fun dating memories?!" And the mushy brainstorming session went on for a few minutes as we added in bits and pieces of cheesy love notes about each other.
But the most treasured moment, was in the grace of realizing that even in this simple little wedding website there was a place and a need to point to something better; past the color schemes and our personalized hashtag, to the life-giving reason we were choosing to do this in the first place. And we wrote this kind of statement of purpose, which ended up spilling into much of our vows, that now hang painted above our nightstands:
A GOSPEL PURPOSE MARRIAGE
We have been redeemed by Jesus. By His grace, we are called and saved in faith. And so we believe that the Lord has graciously brought us together, to help one another become more like Him; to spur our hearts towards holiness. Marriage calls us as believers into an entirely new and selfless life, recognizing that the first purpose in marriage- beyond happiness, companionship, mutual care, provision, hope of a family, or anything else- is to become more like Jesus.
So in the days that are beautiful and life giving, we will choose each other.
In the days that are hard and discouraging, we will choose each other.
And as we pursue God together, we will learn to move toward each other, knowing the other is a gift given to us for the purpose of teaching us how to love better.
And we're overcome with joy that we get to be in this journey together, forever. Until death do us part. In Jesus' name. Amen.
